CITGO Fueling Education 2017 – Lilburn, Georgia

Steve Spangler’s STEM Team Visits Trickum Middle School

November 11, 2017

Jessie Kelly couldn’t believe that she won. “I never win anything… and now I get all of this!” said Jessie who teaches earth science at Trickum Middle School in Lilburn, Georgia. Mrs. Kelly was one of 16,000 sweepstake entries from the CITGO Fueling Education program. The grand prize was an on-site visit and a full-day of professional development from Steve Spangler and his STEM workshop team. Plus, Jessie received a $5,000 gift certificate for related school supplies.
“Trickum Middle School is a perfect example what happens when things go right in education,” Spangler commented during his closing remarks. “When teachers, administrators, students and parents are all on the same page… all focused on making STEM education a priority… everyone excited about introducing students to future STEM-based career opportunities, amazing things happen.” The staff at Trickum MS treated Steve and his instructional team (Carly Reed and Bryan Higgins) to a tour of the building with special stops along the way to visit the science labs
CITGO created the Fueling Education program in 2012 to help foster educational opportunities in classrooms across the nation. Since then, CITGO has donated more than $350,000 in much-needed classroom supplies with support from customers. This year alone, more than 100 teachers are being awarded vouchers for school supplies.

The focus of the workshop was to explore best practices and innovative teaching strategies for engaging students in the scientific inquiry process and introducing them to future opportunities. If you’re not a teacher and you’ve never attended a professional development workshop, here’s a behind the scenes look. It’s not a sit-and-watch experience. These highly engaged teachers are eager to use these hands-on experiences to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.
