Using TikTok to Teach Science

In May of 2020, the creators of TikTok reached out to invite Steve Spangler to join the platform. Okay… Steve’s kind of a cool guy, but he doesn’t have TikTok moves, right? That’s why this request was so cool. TikTok invited Steve to become an official #tiktokpartner and to be a part of their #learningontiktok initiative. Of course, Steve said yes… without knowing one key piece of information… he had to teach a science concept in under 60 seconds (and it had to be engaging and entertaining).

The mission was clear – create a TikTok account (@stevespangler) and upload 40 videos in 30 days. Whatever happened next would be up to the TikTok audience.

At the 30 day mark, Steve’s account had over 500,000 followers, 1.8 million likes and over 30 million video views. Not too bad for a kind of nerdy teacher (no offense, Steve) wanting to use TikTok to teach science. By the end of July 2020, Steve will most certainly break 1 million followers, 12 million likes and close to 70 million views of his videos.

It just goes to show you, it’s possible to get people of all ages excited about science and STEM on even the most hip and trendy of social media platforms. If truth be told, we think it’s his cute baby face… but that’s just our hypothesis.
