Over half of all teachers in Colorado graduate from the University of Northern Colorado… and a third of all Teacher of the Year recipients are also UNC graduates. How do they do it? The School of Education is home to an incredible line-up of professors and mentors who are focused on growing the next generation of amazing teachers.
That’s why it was such an honor for me to to be invited to keynote UNC’s Future Teachers Conference in February 2024. Over 600 aspiring teachers came from all parts of Colorado and even surrounding states for this annual event. Most of these future educators are high school juniors and seniors or community college students who are part of their local “teacher cadet” program. High school teachers and college professors serve as mentors to the cadets as they learn about the teaching profession and even get a chance to try their hand at student teaching in other schools in their community.
The Future Teachers Conference is the brainchild of Suzette Youngs, Chris Kyser, and James Erekson from UNC’s School of Education. What started as a quaint gathering of 40 or so prospective teachers grew into a movement that is bursting with energy and excitement for pre-service teachers.
