Science is a Verb: A Tribute to Irwin Talesnick

Steve Spangler Delivers a Tribute Lecture for His Friend and Mentor at ChemEd 2023

ChemEd is the premiere conference for anyone who teaches chemistry. I attended my first ChemEd in 1995 and have presented at subsequent conferences in 1997, 1999 and 2001 where I was honored to present the Reg Friesen Honorary Lecture.

Twenty years later… I’m honored to have been invited to deliver the opening keynote presentation at ChemEd 2023 at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. This presentation was unique because I was asked to speak about my good friend and mentor, Irwin Talesnick, who passed away in 2020. Irwin’s passing was during the COVID years when it wasn’t possible to gather for a celebration of life event.

My presentation at ChemEd ’23 was just one of many opportunities to remember and celebrate the life of Irwin Talesnick and the countless students and educators he inspired through his work in science education.

Thank you to everyone at ChemEd ’23 who attended my lecture and spent a few minutes with me remembering a wonderful person.
